Cardinals lose another

Union Academy will be without another starter from the 2016-17 season with junior forward Jake Boggs leaving for Carmel Christian. Boggs has grown six inches in the pst 12 months and is now listed as a 6'7 forward. Boggs averaged 7.6 ppg and 4.5 rebounds for the 14-12 Cardninals as a junior. Boggs is the second starter from last years team to leave UA. Dillon Harrison UA's leading scorer last season transfereed to Comeniius High School in Fort Mill SC. Good Luck Jake, you’ll be missed!

Union Academy will be without its leading scorer heading into the 2017-18 season. 6’5 Junior forward Dillion Harrison has transferred out of Union Academy for the 2017-18 school year. Union Academy was 14-12 last season and were led by Harrson, who was named All-UCHOOP’s 1st team and was averaged 16.3 ppg along with 7.7 rpg as a junior and 2nd team All-UCHOOP's as a sophomore. Harrison currently is UA's all-time leading scorer with with 925 career points. Harrison will be attending Comeniius High School in Fort Mill SC. The Knights were 25-11 last season and will lose their top scorer in Kamil Chapman (22.5 ppg) to graduation. Good Luck Dillon, you’ll be missed.!

Weddington finds it's coach

The Weddington Warriors named Aaron Brown the next girls basketball coach at Weddington High, according to athletic director Michael Hart. Brown replaces Ryun Cook, who resigned in the offseason after eight seasons as the girls basketball coach at WHS. Brown comes from Charlotte Latin where is was an assistant and brings more than two decades of coaching experience to the Warriors. Brown will have his backcourt returning with leading scorer Erin Addinson (14.1 points per game) and third-leading scorer Karrah Katzbach (8.1 ppg). Addison was named 2nd Team All-UCHOOPS and Katzbach was named to the UCHOOPS All-New Comer Team as a freshman. Congratulations and good luck Coach Brown!!

Monroe's backcourt headed to college together

Monroe’s outstanding guards, Destiny Wallace and Tanaja Stevenson have signed to continue their education and basketball careers at Clinton College. Stevenson, the 5’3 guard who is a 3 year starter and was a two time 1st team All-UCHoops and averaged 15.8 PPG as a senior. For her career Stevenson averaged 12.9 ppg and 2.3 apg along with 2.5 spg for the Redhawks and Coach Osborne. Wallace a 2-year starter at Monroe averaged 6.1 ppg and 2.5 rpg along with 4.6 spg and was named All-Rocky River as a junior and senior. Destiny started her career at Forest Hills and started a a sophomore. GOODL LUCK LADIES!!!

Piedmont taps former standout to take over.

Piedmont taps former star to lead the women’s team. Piedmont named Kacey Brooks as their new girl’s head basketball coach replacing Phil Apple who stepped down in April. Brooks played at Piedmont when she was known as Kasey Gillis from 2000-2004. She went on to play at Queens University and transfered to Wingate and where she was named 2nd team all-conference as a senior. Brooks previously the girls’ basketball head coach at Central Academy of Technology and Arts in the 2013-2014 season and was assistant at Forest Hills 2010-2011 and Porter Ridge 2009-2010. Brooks takes over a program that will return All-UCHOOPs and All-SCC players guard Caroline Tripp and forward Sarah Griffin along with shooters Lauren Whitley, Kelli Fagala and point guard Chloe Rase. The Panthers were 17-11 and 4-6 in the SCC this season and made the 3A state playoffs but fell to Hickory 70-27 and have made the state playoffs in 11 of his 13 seasons. Good luck Coach Brooks!!!

Sun Valley's Mason picks Lees-McRae College for hoops

Sun Valley's Karli Mason will continure her education and basketball career at Lees-McRae College. Mason annoucned her decision via twitter, "I am blessed to say I have verbally committed to play basketball and to continue my education at Lees McRae College!!".Karli put her name on the dotted line and will be headed to Lees-McCrae in the fall. Mason, a 4-year starter for Sun Valley was named 2nd team All-UCHOOPS as a junior and senior. Karli joined the 1000 point club her senior season after fnishing her Sparatn career with 1118 career points. Mason hit 9 3-pointers and had a career high 31 points vs. Parkwood. Mason was named All-SCC as a senior and junior as well. Congrats Karli!!!

Marvin Ridge's Jones will play college hoops

Marvin Ridge’s Cam Jones is headed to Roanoke College to continue his basketball career and education. Jones, the 6’4 senior guard was named 3rd team All-UCHoops as a junior and senior. Jones averaged 11.3 ppg and 4.6 rpg and was named All-SCC as a senior. Jones helped lead the Marvin Ridge Mavericks to a 17-12 record and into the 2nd round of the state 3A playoffs.

Schwieger and Tyson named 3rd Team All-State

Weddington’s Ryan Schwieger and Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson were named 3rd team All-State by the North Carolina State Coaches Association. Schwieger was UnionCountyHoops.com’s Player of the Year and along with Tyson was named Co-SCC Player of the Year for the conference. Congrats boys!!!

Forest Hills sophomore forward Nas Tyson joined the 1000-point club in the Elite-8 overtime win over East Rutherford. Tyson scored 40 points in the win. That win propelled the Yellow Jackets to the Final-4 for the 2nd straight year. Tyson scored 403 points as a freshman and added 628 points this season. Tyson currently sits at 1031 points. Reaching the 1000-point plateau is difficult enough, and to reach it as a sophomore is rare considering Tyson came off the bench as a freshman. Cuthbertson’s Shelton Mitchell has the most points scored after freshman and sophomore seasons with 1185 points (412 points as a freshman and 773 points scored as a sophomore) Welcome to the 1000-point club Nas!

Piedmont's Apple steps down as girls headcoach.

The longest tenured girls basketball coach in Union Co. is stepping daown. Piedmont girls headcoach Phil Apple has resigned from the position of head girls basketball coach. The Panthers were 17-11 and 4-6 in the SCC this season and made the 3A state playoffs but fell to Hickory 70-27. Coach Apple compiled an overall record of 228-126 (64.4%) and qualified for the state playoffs in 11 of his 13 seasons. Good Luck Coach, you will be missed!

Current Clemson Tiger and former Cuthbertson Cavalier Shelton Mitchell holds the Union Co. record for points in a season with 773 in 2011-12. Current Army Black Knight and former Marvin Ridge Maverick John Emezie scored 763 in 2013-14 and current Limestone and Sun Valley great Shaun Stewart scored 711 in 2011-2012. The 3 top point totals following have all beenl scored in the 2016-17 season. Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson is the only junior for the boys to enter the club this season and now has 1411 career points. Weddington’s Ryan Schwieger ends his career with 1406 points and Sun Valley’s Hughston Finklea finishes with 1122 points.

Six girls entered the club. The Sun Valley junior guard Amanday Cherry finishes her junior year a total of 1181 points and her backcourt teammate senior Karli Mason finishes with 1118 career points. Porter Ridge’s Kierstin Petrini became the 4th Pirate in school history wti 1069 career points. Weddington’s Remi Roberts (1015 pts) and Monroe’s Tanaja Stevenson (1074 pts) joined the club. Parkwood’s Baylee Morton finished her career at Parkwood with 1055 career points.

Union Co.’s top 3 scorers named to the All-District Teams.

Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson and Ryan Schwieger were named to the 2016-17 All-District 9 1st Team. Tyson, a junior led Union Co. in scoring and rebounding with a 25.4 scoring average and 9.5 rebound average and led Piedmont to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Schwieger, a senior was 2nd in Union Co. with a 21.4 ppg average and was 3rd in Union Co. in rebounding with a 9.0 average while leading Weddington to the 3rd round of the state playoffs. Tyson and Schwieger were named Co-SCC Player of the Year this season.

Forest Hills’ sophomore Nas Tyson was named to the 2016-17 All-District 3rd team. Tyson was 3rd in Union Co. in scoring with a 21.0 ppg, he was tied for 4th in rebounding with a 7.6 rpg average and led Union Co. in steals with a 3.3 spg average all while leading Forest Hills to the NC 2-A Final Four.

Sun Valley’s Cherry named All-District Team.

Sun Valley’s Amanda Cherry was the only Union Co. girl’s player to make the 2016-17 All-District teams. Cherry was named 3rd Team after leading Union Co. in assists and finishing tied for 3rd in scoring with a 15.1 ppg as a junior. She was named All-SCC and SCC Player of the Year after leading the Spartans to a 18-8 record and the SCC title.

Pirate's Taylor named to the All-SW4A team

Porter Ridge’s senior guard Noah Taylor was named to the All-SW4A conference team. Taylor helped guide the Pirates to s 9-14 record. On the season Taylor finished 4th in Union Co. in scoring with a 16.1 points per game average along with grabbing 6.1 rebounds per game and dished out 3.0 assists on the season. Taylor is Porter Ridge’s all-time leading scorer with 813 career points. Congrats Noah!

Porter Ridge’s Kirsten Petrini was named to the All-SW4A conference team. Petrini averaged 12.5 ppg for the Pirates this season. Petrini eclipsed the 1000-point mark for her career this season. Congrats Kirsten.

Yellow Jackets Nas Tyson enters Union Co. record book

Forest Hill’s sophomore Nas Tyson joins the Union Co. record book after scoring 40 points in a 87-84 overtime win over East Rutherford in the Elite-8. There have been 12 players that have scored 40 or more points in a game in Union Co. history. Sun Valley’s Shaun Stewart holds the record with 45 points in a game. Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson scored 44 this season in a playoff loss to Freedom and Marvin Ridge’s John Emezie scored 44 points in a win over Central Cabarrus in 2013-14.

Weddington's Cook steps down!

Weddington girls’ basketball coach Ryun Cook is stepping down as head coach effective immediately. Cook won 212 games as a varsity coach while at Sun Valley and Weddington, he is 11-7 in the state playoffs. Cook stated, “I've coached high school girls for 17 years and it's a lot of time and stress. While I've enjoyed it, there are more demands every year and it's a year around commitment for sure. It's time for me to spend more time at home and watching my kids' sports. I love Weddington High School and plan to stay here and support the school and community in other ways.” He took over the Weddington program prior to the start of 2009-10 season. While at Weddington Cook won 3 conference championships, he reached two Elite-8’s and one final-4. Cook is 145-73 while at Weddington. Cook won numerous awards including conference coach of the year and UnionCountyHoops.com’s Coach of the Year twice. Coach Cook will be missed. GOOD LUCK COACH!!

Union Academy’s Dillion Harrison and Derek Young were named to the All-Yadkin Valley team. Harrison, a junior forward averaged 16.9 ppg as a junior and 7.4 rpg with 2.8 apg and 2.7 spg. Young, a freshman averaged 14.9 ppg along with 7.4 prg and 2.5 blocks a game for Coach Brandon Rains. The Cardinals finished the 2016-17 season 14-12 and were 5-5 in the Yadkin Valley. Union Academy’s head coach Brandon Rains was named Yadkin Valley Coach of the Year after leading the Cardinals to a 14-12 record, 5-5 in the conference and into the state 1A Playoffs. Union Academy has two named to All-Yadkin Valley Team Union Academy’s Brianna Pressley and Lauryn Boyd were named to the All-Yadkin Valley team. Pressley aveaged 17.4 ppg for the Cardinals along with 5.1 rpg and 3.9 spg as a junior. Boyd averaged 11.7 ppg and 12.4 rpg and 2.0 steals per game for Union Academy. The Cardinals finished the 2016-17 season 8-15 and were 2-8 in the Yadkin Valley. Congrats ladies!!

Schwieger now Warriors all-time leading scorer!

Weddington forward Ryan Schwieger set the Weddington record for most points in a career for boys after a 33-point game in the 1st round playoff win over AC Reynolds. Schwieger surpassed Weddington great Bennett Rutherford’s record of 1310 career points. This is the second time that Schwieger broke one of Rutherfords Weddington records. Earlier this season Schwieger broke Rutherfords record for points in a game with 37 in a win over Sun Valley.

Piemdont junior guard Lauren Whitley added her name to the Union Co. record book by blocking 10 shots in the 1st round tournament win over Weddington. The Union Co. record is 18 held by Union Academy's Erin Walters durning the 2009-2010 season. Whitley joins former Union Co. standouts Sun Valley's Stephanie Taylor, Cuthbertson's Morgan Carlson to record 10 blocks in a game. Whitley finished the game wtih 10 blocks/2 assists/5 points in the win. Congrats Lauren!!!

Parkwood's Morton newest member to the 1000 point club!

Parkwood’s Baylee Morton is the newest addition to the 1000-point club. Ms. Morton entered her last regular season game with 989 total points and finished the night with 25 points on senior night giving her 1024 as the Rebels head to the Rocky River conference tournament. Parkwood is rich in basketball history, Ms. Morton joins the ranks of Tiffinay Brown (2161 pts), Cynthia Monroe (1877 pts), Emery Tsitouris (1792 pts), Dianna Monroe (1751 pts), Sureka Hammonds (1724 pts), Morgan Brown (1438 pts), Valerie Laney (1371 pts), Brittany Autry (1298 pts), Alison McAdam (1178 pts), Michelle Brown (1157 pts), Trudy Horton (1114 pts), and Julie McLean (1010 pts) in the elite 1000 point scorers club. Morton is the fifth girl’s player to reach the 1000-point plateau this season. Morton joins Sun Valley’s Karli Mason, Amanda Cherry, Waddington’s Remi Roberts, Monroe's Tanaja Stevenson and Porter Ridge’s Kirsten Petrini all hit the 1000 point mark this season. Monroe’s Tanaja Steveson joins the ranks for 1000 point scorers in Union Co. history after a 54-21 win over rival Forest Hills on senior night. Ms. Steveson needed 11 points to enter the 1000 point club, she finished the game with 12 and 1001 points headed into the Rocky River conference tournament. Tanaja joins the ranks for Jeanette Oxner (1693 pts), Asha Jordan (1225 pts ) Deequisha McCain (1210 pts) and Zasha Barrett (1078 pts). Tanaja is the 6th girls player to reach the 1000-point plateau this season, joining Sun Valley’s Karli Mason, Amanda Cherry, Waddington’s Remi Roberts, Parkwood’s Baylee Morton and Porter Ridge’s Kirsten Petrini all hit the 1000 point mark this season. Porter Ridge's Kirsten Petrini is the newest member of the 1000 point club. Petrini, a four year starter for Ina Thompson at Porter ridge scored her 1000 point in a loss to Myers Park. Kirsten joins Porter Pirate great Kelley Godbout (1610 pts), Jada Huntley (1350 pts), Jasmin Huntley (1078 pts) as the only Pirates in the 1K club. Congrats Kirsten!

Weddington's Roberts is a rebound machine!

In a showdown for 1st place in the SCC Weddington's Remi Roberts came up big by grabbing 23 rebounds in the Warriors 51-34 win over Sun Valley. Roberts' 23 rebounds tied a Weddington record set by Stephanie Watts in 2012-13. Roberts 23 rebounds ranks her tied for 5th all time on the most rebounds in a game list. Roberts previous high was 22 in 2015-16. Forest Hills' Jennifer Haily holds the record with 30 rebounds, she did it twice. Congrats Remi!

Sun Valley's Finklea commits to Wingate!

Sun Valley Spartan Hughston Finklea has verbally committed to Wingate to further his education and he basketball career. Finkela, a 6’3 wing is a 4-year starter for Coach Keith Mason and the Sun Valley Spartans. Finklea is a 1000-pt scorer in this 4 years at Sun Valley. Hugston was named 1st Team All-UCHOOPS as a junior and 2nd team All-UCHOOPS as a sophomore and well as being named All-SCC as a sophomore and junior. Congrats Hughston!

Weddington's senior forward Ryan Schwieger is not Weddington's All-Time leading rebounder after grabbing 6 rebounds in a 71-52 win over Anson Co. Schwieger entered the game wtih 549 career rebounds, just one behind former Weddington standout Parker Farfour (07-09). Schwieger now has 555 career rebounds and now ranks 6th all-time leader in rebounds. Congrats Ryan!!

Weddington's senior forward Remi Roberts joins the 1000-point club during the 49-44 win over Anson Co. Roberts is now the 5th member to join the 1000-point club this season. Roberts joins Sun Valley's Karli Mason and Amanda Cherry. Roberts, a four-year starter for the Warriors has scored 1005 points so far after scoring 23 points in leading the Warriors to the win. Roberts joins Warrior greats Stephanie Watts (2566), Jordan Alley (1587), Allie Cashion (1458) and Sam Sebastian (1000). The Warriors improved to 4-0 in the SCC and 12-4 overall. Congrats Remi!!

Sun Valley senior guard Hughston Finklea joined the 1000-point club during the 68-57 loss to Marvin Ridge. Finklea entered the Marvin game needing just one point to get to 1000. He is now the 4th member to join the 1000-point club this season. Finklea joins Piedmont's Hunter Tyson, Weddington's Ryan Schwieger. Finklea, a four-year starter for the Spartans has scored 1006 points total. Sun Valley senior guard Karli Mason joined the 1000-point club during the 52-39 win over Cuthbertson. Mason is the 3rd member to join the 1000-point club this season. She joins her teammate Amanda Cherry and on the boy’s side Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson and Piedmont’s Ryan Schwieger. Mason, a four-year starter for the Spartans has scored 1003 points total now after scoring 12 in leading the Spartans to the win. Mason joins Spartan greats Amanda Leigh (1547), Stephanie Taylor (1186), Jordyn Gaymon (1027) and Amanda Cherry (1014). The Spartans improved to 3-0 in the SCC and 13-3 overall. Congrats Karli!!


Pirate's Taylor is now Porter Ridge's all-time scorer

Porter Ridge's 3-year starter Noah Taylor is now the Pirates all-team leading scorer for boys. Taylor passed Nick Reid (656 pts) who played for the Pirates the first two years the school was opened (2005-07). Taylor set the Pirate record during the 95-91 overtime loss to Forest Hills. Taylor scored 33 points in the loss. Taylor curretly has 673 career points, Nick Reid has 656pts, Caleb Homesly has 640pts and DJ Harrison has 608pts (only played 1 year at PR). Congrats Noah!


Sun Valley's Cherry joins the 1000 point club

Sun Valley junior Amanda Cherry joined the 1000 point club in last night’s 65-61 win over Anson Co. Cherry, a 3-year starter for the Spartans currently has 1005 points. Cherry joins former Spartan greats Amanda Leigh (1547), Stephanie Taylor (1186), Hannah Adamczyk (1056), Jordan Gaymon (1027) as 1000 point scorers in Sun Valley school history. Congrats Amanda!!


Weddington's Schwieger joins the 1000 point club

Weddington’s Ryan Schwieger joined the 1000 point club in last night’s 60-59 win over Monroe. Schwieger, a 3-year starter for the Warriors scored 16 in the win. His 10th and 11th point came on a dunk that put him at 1000 points for his Weddington career. The future Princeton Tiger currently sits at 1005 career points. Schwieger joins former Warrior greats Bennett Rutherford (1310), Corey Rase (1257), Jordan Barber (1156), Ben Short (1075) and Stewart Short (1055) as 1000 point scorers in Weddington school history. Congrats Ryan!!


Piedmont's Tyson latest to enter the 1000 point club

After scoring 33 points in Friday's 61-48 win over Monroe, Piedmont's junior forward Hunter Tyson enters the 1000 point club. Tyson career total now sits at 1015 points with at least 13 games left in the season. Tyson scored 282 points as a freshman, 484 points as a junior and is currenlty at 247 points thru 9 games. Tyson joins Cameron Tripp (1443 PTS) and Marcus Winnegan (1137 pts) as the only three Piedmont Panthers with at least 1000 points in their careers. Congrats Hunter!


Headcoaching change for Lady Mavericks

After two seasons and two games into this season, the Marvin Ridge Mavericks have parted ways with varisty girls head coach Marshall Smith. Smith took over the Marvin Ridge program from Dwight Miller after the 2014-15 season. Smith went 9-43 as the Mavericks headcoach. In Smith's first season the Mavs were 0-24 but showed improvment in 2015-16 finishing 7-14 and 2-8 in the SCC. The Mavs opened this season 0-2 with losses at Ardrey Kell 66-45 and a home loss to Parkwood 64-53. Assistant coach Jamie Ellis will serve as interim head coach this season, accordingt to Marvin Ridge AD Tom Jamerson. Ellis was a standout player for the Mavericks from 2010-2014.


Player of the Year Schwieger picks Princeton!

The 2015-16 UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year Ryan Schwieger has committed to continue he basketball career at Princeton. the 6'6 Schwieger announced this via his twitter account, "BLESSED to announce my commitment to Princeton University. Schwieger finished 3rd in Union Co. in scoring with 17.7 ppg (3rd in Union Co.). Ryan grabbed 7.9 rebounds per game (4th in Union Co.)from the guard position while dishing out 3.4 assists per game (2nd in Union Co.) and adding1.4 steals per game. Ryan helped lead the Warriors to a 21-6 record, a SCC title and SCC Tournament title along with reaching the 2nd round of the 3A state playoffs. CONGRATS RYAN!!!


Spartan's Limon commits to Bluefield State!

Sun Valley senior guard Isabella Limon has verbally committed to Bluefield State to continue her basketball career. Limon made her announcement via twitter, “So excited and blessed to say I’m verbally committed to Bluefield State”. Limon averaged 9.3 ppg and 3.1 rebounds per game for the Spartans as a junior guard. Limon was named Special Mention for UnionCountyHoops.com as well. Limon, a two year starter averages 8.8. ppg , 3.0 rpg and 2.1 apg for Coach Jeremy Waldrup. GOOD LUCK ‘BELLA!!


Rebels have their HC!

The Parkwood Lady Rebels have found their new women’s basketball head coach. The Rebels have named Brian Morris as the new HC. Morris replaces Kate Edwards, who left for Nations Ford HS in June. Morris comes from Arborbrook Christian School located in Matthews, NC. Morris led the Falcons to a 26-4 record and the 2nd round of the CACAA Tournament in 2015-16. Morris was 56-18 overall since the 2013-14 season at Arborbrook Christian. Parkwood was 60-18 under Edwads and made the playoffs all three years under including advancing to the 3rd round 2A state playoffs in 2015-16. Good luck Coach Morris!


Yellow Jackets' Tyson gets D-1 offer!

Forest Hills High rising sophomore Nas Tyson received his first Division I scholarship offer over the weekend. According to Yellow Jackets head coach Matt Sides, Hampton University made the offer to Tyson at an AAU tournament in Florida where the 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard is a member of Team Charlotte. Tyson was named UCHOOPS.com’s New Comer of the Year last season, helping Forest Hills go 28-3, win the Rocky River Conference title and a trip to the 2A state semifinals. Tyson ranked second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. Tyson now joins three Union Co. boys with at least one Division I offer; Tyson joins Weddington senior Ryan Schwieger and Piedmont junior Hunter Tyson. Schwieger has multiple offers, while Hunter Tyson has offers from Clemson, Tennessee, Appalachian State, Charlotte and Elon. Congrats Nas!
