Ryan Schwieger (W)

2016-17 BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The 2016-17 UnionCountyHoops.com’s Boys Player of the Year for the 2nd straight year is Weddington’s Ryan Schwieger. Schwieger finished 2nd in Union Co. in scoring with 21.4 ppg (2nd in Union Co.). Ryan grabbed 9.0 rebounds per game (3rd in Union Co.) from the guard position while dishing out 3.0 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game & blocked 1.1 shots per game for the Warriors.

Mr. Schwieger dropped a career high & school record of 42 points in a 74-59 win over Marvin Ridge in the 2nd round of the state playoffs. Ryan became Weddingotn's all-time leader in points and rebound this season. Ryan ranks 12th all-time in career points in Union Co. history with 1406. Ryan was named 1st team ALL-UCHOOPS.com along with 1st team All-SCC and was named SCC-Co Player of the Year. Ryan was name UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Week for week 2 and week 13.

Ryan helped lead the Warriors to a 21-8 record, a SCC title (9-1) and SCC Tournament title along with reaching the 3rd round of the 3A state playoffs. Ryan is the 4th Weddington Warrior to win the Boys Player of the Year, joining Cory Rase ('08), Brandon Watts ('13) and Jordan Barber ('14). Ryan would go on to play at Princeton. Congrats Ryan!!!

Amanda Cherry (SV)

2016-17 GIRLS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The 2016-17 UnionCountyHoops.com’s Girls Player of the Year is Sun Valley's Amanda Cherry. Ms. Cherry finished the 2016-17 season tied for 3rd in Union Co. in scoring with a 15.4 ppg average and also led Union Co. in assists with a 6.1 per game average. Cherry alson grapped 5.6 rebounds per game and had 2.6 steals per game and blocked 1.0 shot per game. Ms. Cherry scored a season high 29 points in a 65-61 win over Anson Co. Amanda joined the 1000 point club this season and currently has 1156 career points.

Amanda was named 1st Team All-SCC along with being named 2016-17 SCC Player of the Year. Amanda was named UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Week for weeks 6 & 8. Ms. Cherry helped lead the Sun Valley Spartans to a 18-8 record and a SCC title and into the 1st round 3A-state playoffs. Amanda was named 1st Team All-UCHOOPS for the 2nd year in a row.Amanda would go on to play at Coker. Congrats Amanda!!!
