2024-25 BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The 2024-25 UnionCountyHoops.com’s Boys Player of the Year is Weddington's KJ Younger. KJ had an outstanding senior year helping to lead the Weddington Warriors to a 23-6 record, SCC Title, SCC Tournament Title and advanced to the 3rd Round of the 4A State playoffs for Coach Ellington.

KJ led all of Union Co. in scoring with a 25.0 points per game average while averaging 8.7 rebounds per game, dished out 2.9 assists per game and added 1.8 steals per game. Younger scored in double figures in every game this season including a season high 38 points in a 68-64 win over Cuthbertson. KJ recorded a career high 18 rebounds along with 21 points in a 68-55 1st RD playoff win over Cox Mill. Younger scored 20+ points in 22 games this season for the Warriors.

Younger set a Weddington school record for points in a season with 699 points which broke the school record he set last season with 665 points. Youngers 699 points this season is the 5th best scoring season in Union Co. history. KJ was named UCHoops Player of the Week 7 times during the 2024-25 season as well as being named the SCC Player of the Year, All-SCC for the 2nd year in a row. Younger was named District Player of the Year and 1st team All-district and 3rd Team All-State.

KJ is headed to UNC-Greensboro to continue his academics and basketball career.

Kate Schindler (MR)

2024-25 GIRLS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The 2024-25 UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year is Marvin Ridge junior wing Kate Schindler. Ms. Schindler helped lead the Mavericks to a 24-6 record, SCC Champs, SCC Tournament Champs and into the Elite-8 for the NC 4A State Playoffs for the first time in Marvin Ridge school history. Kate averaged 19.7 points per game, along with 7.6 rebounds per game and added 2.8 assists per game and 1.2 block per game for the season and shooting 34% from beyond the 3-point line.

Ms. Schindler scored 571 points this season setting the Marvin Ridge School record and ranks 16th all-time in Union Co. history for points scored in a season. Kate set the Union Co. record for points in a single game with 58 and the Union Co. record for 3-pointers made in a game with 12 both in a win over Cuthbertson. Kate scored in double figures in 26 games, topping 30+ points in a game 4 times this season. Recorded 5 double doubles for the Mavericks during the season. Grabbed a career high 15 rebounds in a win over Weddington and recorded a season high 8 steals in the win over Independence.

Kate led the Mavericks to a 24-6 record and into the Elite-8 all while being named UCHOOPS Player of the Week 6 times this season, 1st Team All-UCHoops, the SCC Player of the Year, All-SCC and 1st team All-district as a junior.

Kate Schindler is now the second Marvin Ridge Maverick to win the UCHoops Player of the Year award, joining former Maverick Jordan Henry who won the award in 2011-12!
